Fitness Assessment Centre

The maritime industry is becoming increasingly aware of the need to test the physical fitness of medically fit seafarers. Where the existing statutory ENG1 seafarer medical examinations are used to assess the seafarer’s medical health, additional procedures are now being introduced to assess cardio respiratory fitness, dexterity and manoeuvrability.

Our marine medical centre in Glasgow was among the first in the UK to provide a full functional capacity and fitness testing to MCA standards. This level of testing assesses cardio respiratory fitness, dexterity and manoeuvrability. There are also an increasing number of shipping companies who have set their own fitness standards and the fitness assessment centre is equipped to carry out such bespoke testing for both seagoing crew and shorebased marine personnel. New MCA guidelines can help companies identify when such fitness testing is required and our marine medical fitness test centre can carry out all levels of testing.

The examinations last approximately 1½ hrs and an initial ENG1 seafarer medical is also required prior to the test.

The fitness assessment centre opened in Glasgow in March 2007 and the service has continued to expand allowing other shipping companies to take advantage of this excellent facility.
